Dozens of Stolen Street Signs Cost Pennsylvania Town Thousands

If they put up a "don't steal" sign in one Pennsylvania community, it'll probably get stolen.

Officials in tiny Hamilton Township said bandits have made off with at least 30 township-owned signs in the last year, costing taxpayers more than $3,000.

Road Master Jay Livingston told Tuesday's Evening Sun they're mainly interested in speed-limit and stop signs.

He said thieves are likely selling the signs and posts for scrap or using them for decoration. Each costs about $100 to replace, plus labor.

State police investigated. They've alerted scrap yards to watch out for people hauling in traffic signs.

Hamilton Township has about 2,500 residents. It's located between York and Gettysburg near the Pennsylvania-Maryland border.
