Reading Terminal Bakery Plans Philadelphia Expansion

What began as a bakery and eventual standalone doughnut shop at the Reading Terminal Market has now become a full-fledged business outside the public market's confines. A merchant has opened its first brick-and-mortar shop, with plans to open more in the Philadelphia region.

Beiler's at the Reading Terminal on Tuesday opened a doughnut and ice cream shop at 398 Harrisburg Ave. in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the company's first brick-and-mortar location. A grand opening is slated for Aug. 23.

Beiler's Bakery has been a mainstay at the Reading Terminal since it opened in the early '80s. Alvin Beiler took over the business about 32 years ago and now runs the business with sons Keith Beiler and Kevin Beiler.

The popularity of the bakery's doughnuts led to a standalone shop in 2013 — Beiler's Donuts and Salads — across the bakery, replacing A.J. Pickle Patch & Salads, also by Beiler's. The expansion of the doughnut portion is what Keith and Kevin Beiler will be focusing on moving forward.
