Flagship Wawa Opens on Center City's Avenue of the Arts

Wawa lovers rejoice! The Delaware County-based convenience store chain opened its flagship location in Center City Friday morning with an affair rivaling the Phillies World Series parade.

The Avenue of the Arts Wawa, located at the corner of Broad and Walnut Streets, opened to customers as Mayor Michael Nutter, Eagles cheerleaders and a trio from the Philadelphia Orchestra welcomed the morning crowds grabbing their coffees during the 9 a.m. grand opening ceremony.

The opening of a new Wawa at Broad and Walnut brings the flagship store to Center City.

The 24-hour store pushed its opening date up to take advantage of the estimated 1.5 million expected to visit Philadelphia for the papal visit next week. The decision, made in July, caused crews to work extra hours through August, adding a sixth day to the work week, so the former Robinson Luggage shop would be ready in time.
