A suspect in a deadly shooting in Newark was arrested by police after officers found him in a dumpster following the shooting Wednesday afternoon.
Police said 26-year-old Victor A. Brantley was shot and killed near Garside Street and Bloomfield Avenue around 4:45 p.m. Another man who was nearby when shots rang out suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.
As officers were responding to the shooting, they noticed a suspect vehicle racing from the scene, Essex County prosecutors said.
The officers pursued the vehicle for three blocks, and then one person got out of the fleeing vehicle. As the suspect was attempting to get away, officers fired their weapons, prosecutors said.
On Wednesday, sources told NBC 4 New York that the suspect was shot in the leg, but prosecutors later said no one was injured when officers fired their weapons.
Chopper 4 footage from over the scene Wednesday showed police canvassing the area, going through backyards and streets with K-9s while holding flashlights.
Officers found the suspect hiding in a dumpster behind a high school near Kearny Street and Broadway a short time later, according to prosecutors.
The suspect was identified as Joan Aguiree, 23, of Newark, on Thursday night.
Aguiree has been charged with murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
