New Jersey Can't Take Towns' Affordable Housing Money: Court

A New Jersey court says Gov. Chris Christie's administration may not seize money that towns had set aside for affordable housing projects.

An appeals panel released the ruling Thursday in the latest affordable housing ruling to go against the governor.

Christie had been trying since 2012 to be able to use for the state budget some money that towns charged developers for future affordable housing projects.Affordable housing advocates and local governments, who are often at odds, objected to the plans. The court on Thursday agreed with them.

The Fair Share Housing Center says the decision will mean towns can spend a total of nearly $200 million on housing.

Earlier this year, the state Supreme Court said judges would get oversight of affordable housing in the state.
