Car Strikes, Kills Elderly Man Crossing Jersey Shore Road

Authorities say an elderly man was struck and killed by a car as he tried to cross a street.

Middle police say 87-year-old township resident Howard Severance was trying to cross Route 9, just south of Shell Bay Avenue, when he was struck in a southbound lane around 9:10 p.m. Tuesday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

Authorities say the driver remained at the scene after the accident occurred. A stretch of the roadway was closed while the accident was investigated, but no major travel delays were reported.

No charges have been filed, but the accident remains under investigation.
