Man on Trial in Murders of Parents, Twin Brother

A suburban Philadelphia judge is hearing evidence in the trial of a man accused of having killed his parents and twin brother with a sword more than three years ago.

Prosecutors in Montgomery County are seeking first-degree murder convictions against 27-year-old Joseph McAndrew Jr. in the March 2011 slayings in Gulph Mills.

Authorities allege that he used a sword to stab 70-year-old Joseph C. McAndrew, 64-year-old Susan McAndrew, and his twin, James McAndrew.

KYW reports that prosecutors took a possible death penalty off the table after the defendant waived his right to a jury trial.

Prosecutors argue that McAndrew knew what he was doing and knew it was wrong. But defense attorney Paul Bauer says his client is insane and stopped taking medication months before the murders.
