State police say a central Pennsylvania man nearly killed his mother by beating her about the face and head as the two argued in the waning moments of 2013.
Online court records don't list an attorney for 30-year-old Matthew James Baldessaro, who police say argued with his 55-year-old mother shortly before midnight Tuesday at a home in Tyrone Township. That's about 90 miles east of Pittsburgh.
Police say the beating left the woman with "severe head and face trauma'' and she was transferred to an unspecified hospital in Pittsburgh after first being rushed to UPMC Altoona hospital. Her condition was not immediately available Thursday.
Police have charged Baldessaro with attempted criminal homicide, aggravated assault and other crimes.
He remained in the Blair County Prison on Thursday, unable to post $500,000 bail.
