Lawsuit Challenges New Jersey Graduation Requirements

A new state mandate that says New Jersey students must pass two standardized tests to be eligible to graduate high school is being challenged in court.

Several civil rights and parent advocacy groups have filed a lawsuit to block the mandate adopted in August by the state Board of Education. They claim the new rule violates the state's graduation statute and other applicable laws.

The mandate means students will have to pass the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers tests in Algebra 1 and 10th-grade English language arts. It took effect with students entering eighth grade this fall, or the high school class of 2021.

The lawsuit was filed Friday and made public Monday by the Education Law Center and the state's American Civil Liberties Union chapter.
