Freight Train Strikes, Kills Pennsylvania Halfway House Inmate

Police and the county coroner are trying to determine whether the death of a halfway house inmate hit by a freight train was an accident or suicide.

The Berks County coroner says 31-year-old Peter Lee Jr. died of head injuries after he was struck by the train at about 2:45 p.m. Thursday in South Heidelberg Township. That's about 65 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

Lee was an inmate at the Wernersville Community Corrections Center.

Township and state police haven't said why Lee was outside the center at the time, though inmates at such facilities are often free on work-release during the day.

The manner of Lee's death remained under investigation Friday.
