First Lady Visits UPenn

As the Joining Forces campaign celebrates its first year, the First Lady announces a major initiative involving nurses, veterans and PTSD at UPenn.

First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden announce a major pledge by the nation's nursing community at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing on Wednesday afternoon.

Five hundred nursing schools and 150 state and national nursing organizations across the country have pledged to educate current and future nurses on how to recognize and care for veterans with post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injuries, depression and other combat related issues.

The national initiative is aimed at ensuring our nation's nurses are prepared to help meet the unique health needs of service members, veterans and their families.

"It's not surprising that America's nurses came through in this way, because nurses get things done," said Mrs. Obama.

The initiative is part of the Joining Forces campaign that recognizes, honors and serves military families. Joining Forces was launched by Mrs. Obama and Dr. Biden on April 12th, 2011.
