Fire Forces Yeadon Families into the Cold

Families were forced out into the cold Sunday in Yeadon, Delaware County by a fire that left more than 80 apartments damaged or without power.

The fire broke out at about 2:30 a.m. at the Forest Creek apartments on Front Street.

Residents of one building said they heard an explosion and noticed smoke. Firefighters soon arrived and eventually determined that a transformer box mounted on the front of one building had shorted out,

Crews evacuated the building and cut off power to the complex's other buildings, forcing the evacuation of 84 apartments.

Many residents sat in their vehicles or stood outside, huddled under blankets, until buses arrived to take them to Yeadon Borough Hall, where the Red Cross had established a temporary warming station.

PECO is working to restore power to the building.
