Feds Teach Pennsylvania Banks, Businesses on ID Theft

Pittsburgh's federal prosecutor and experts from the FBI and Secret Service are meeting to school banks and businesses on tactics they can use to avoid identity theft.

Wednesday's Point of Sale Threat Training at a suburban hotel comes as the feds have unsealed an indictment against a former Butler County couple.

Robert and Jennifer MacVittie, formerly of Cranberry, are charged with conspiring to steal identity information from Wal-Mart customer and using it to cash forged checks.

Investigators say the couple took cellphone videos over the shoulders of people who cashed checks at Wal-Mart, so they could steal the customers' social security numbers.

The couple allegedly used that information to forge and cash counterfeit checks in Pennsylvania and several other states.

They were arrested at a Nevada casino last week before authorities unsealed the indictment Tuesday.
