Drivers in New Jersey will have to take their vehicles to a private inspection station for re-testing if they fail emissions testing under new rules that take effect next month.
Motorists are currently permitted to get a second test at state inspection stations.
MVC chief Raymond Martinez tells NJ.com the state currently pays for the second test. Under the new rules, motorists must go to a private station for re-inspection to insure their vehicles are prepared before bringing it to inspection.
Martinez says the state is charged $20.29 by contractors for each inspection and officials are looking for ways to reduce costs.
Vehicles from 1995 and older will no longer need to be inspected so private garages will not need to buy equipment to test tail pipe emissions.
