DA: Cornered Suspect Shot Himself to End Deadly Chase

A central Pennsylvania man accused of raping one woman and killing another during a one-day January crime rampage died of a self-inflicted gunshot to the head, not shots fired by police after he was cornered following a chase. reports Dauphin County District Attorney Ed Marsico Jr. announced those findings in the death of 23-year-old Donald Tolbert III, of New Bloomfield.

State police say Tolbert also stole a vehicle and robbed or burglarized two businesses during a four-hour series of events on Jan. 11 that ended when police cornered him on a cul-de-sac in Susquehanna Township.

The district attorney says two township officers were justified in firing at Tolbert, after seeing a gun in his hand and a muzzle flash. Investigators also determined Tolbert was legally drunk and had painkillers in his system.
