Atlantic City Library Teams with Barbers to Promote Literacy

The Atlantic City Free Public Library is bringing books to local barbershops in an effort to promote youth literacy.

The program is called "Fade to Books" and it is geared toward children under 12. The Press of Atlantic City reports the program began after the New Jersey State Library's partnership with the Long Branch Public Library and the Bridge of Books Foundation.

Program director Wendell Cherry says barbers participate in the program by encouraging children in their shops to read while they wait.

The program was fully implemented last winter, and three barbershops in the city are participating. Cherry says the library is open to more barbershops participating in the program.
