Abused Dog Takes Her First Steps to Recovery

On Tuesday, Precious, who was found barely alive in a filthy Chester basement a few weeks ago, took her first walk since she was taken to SPCA.

A few weeks after being found fighting for her life inside a filthy Chester home, an abused dog is taking her first steps to recovery, both literally and figuratively.

The Delaware County SPCA says Precious, a 3-year-old black female Pit Bull Terrier mix, was discovered inside a flea and feces-infested basement in Chester in the beginning of the month. Investigators say repair workers were inside the basement of the home after a hot water heater burst. While working, they found the dog barely alive. They called 911 and the animal was transported to the Delco SPCA.

The dog only weighed 19 pounds when she should weigh 45 to 50 pounds. Upon her discovery, she could barely walk or pull her head up. Her former owner was cited with failure to provide sustenance and failure to provide veterinary care. The dog was deliberately starved and neglected and was anemic after a flea infestation and bi-lateral ear infection, according to investigators. Witnesses also told investigators Precious had a mother that was the victim of the same neglect and died in the owner’s basement a few years ago.

Precious continues to prove to be a fighter and survivor however. On Tuesday she took her first walk since she was taken to the SPCA. The magical moments were captured on video.

Precious now weighs 26 pounds and is eating three regular meals a day, according to the SPCA. But she still has a long way to go before her full recovery.
