Wheelchair Bound Accident Victim In Coma

Man with cerebral palsy is struck by driver who ran from the scene of the accident

A 51-year old cerebral palsy victim is in a coma following an accident on Tuesday night in Kensington.

It happened at Elkhart Street and Frankford Avenue.  David Merovitz had gone out to pick up some medicine night.  When he didn’t come home, his worried fiance called police.

“They said, can you come identify the wheelchair?  So I went around, identified the wheelchair and I knew exactly whose it was, I knew right away it was David” said Amey Campanella .

Merovitz’s mother Jean is stunned. “They couldn’t have not noticed that they hit David.  I mean, he was in a wheelchair. It’s a pretty big wheelchair and he's a pretty big guy.”

Police say the driver stopped at the scene, but ran away, leaving his female passenger in the car.  Investigators confiscated the vehicle and tell NBC10 charges are pending. Merovitz’s mother won’t rest until the driver is behind bars.

"I want to say that there's a coward out there that he runs somebody down, my son, in a wheelchair? My son wasn't trash that you leave in the street just laying there."
