Out of โan abundance of caution,โ a Delaware elementary school closed Wednesday after a man was shot and killed there overnight.
Dover officers found Derrick Combs dead of multiple gunshot wounds on the grounds of Towne Point Elementary School on Buckson Drive shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday, Dover police said.
Investigators found no threat to the school, calling the deadly shooting, โnot a random act.โ
The Capital School District decided to close the school โIn the spirit of utmost caution,โ superintendent Dr. Dan Shelton said in a statement posted to the districtโs website.
Teachers and students were gone for the day and never in danger in what Shelton called โa domestic incident.โ
โDover Police Department works very closely with the Capital School District in incidents involving our schools,โ Shelton said. โWe have no reason to believe that there is currently any potential threat against any of our students or staff. This is an ongoing investigation by the Dover Police Department.โ

Students and staff should expect an increased Dover police presence when classes resume Thursday, Shelton said.
โAs you know, the Capital School District takes student and staff safety very seriously and are saddened by the unfortunate events that may take place in our neighborhoods,โ Shelton said.
Police didnโt reveal a motive for the shooting but said they do have a person of interest in the case.
