Toll Cheat Crackdown on the Expressway

Motorists are angry they're paying tolls while others aren't.

Officials are cracking down on toll cheats on the Atlantic City Expressway in the wake of complaints from motorists.

State troopers are randomly stationed at the expressway's two main toll plazas and at its entrance and exit ramps.

The South Jersey Transportation Authority, which operates the highway, tells The Press of Atlantic City the agency uses license plate photos to track down violators.

Vehicle owners are sent letters, with an initial $25 fine. Fines increase with each successive letter.

Authority spokeswoman Sharon Gordon says the agency has been flooded recently with complaints from motorists reporting toll evaders.

Gordon says people are angry that they're paying tolls while others aren't.
