Toddler Injured After Teen Crashes Into McDonald's: Cops

Police say a 2-year-old girl was injured after a 17-year-old boy crashed his vehicle into a McDonald's.

A 2-year-old girl is in the hospital after an accident at a Newark McDonald’s.

It happened Saturday at 12:49 p.m. at the McDonald’s restaurant on 815 South College Avenue.

Police say a 17-year-old boy from New Castle was trying to pull a 2012 Dodge Caravan into a parking space on the west side of the restaurant. For an unknown reason, the car accelerated and struck the side of the building, partially crashing into the women’s bathroom, according to investigators.

Police say a 31-year-old woman from Newark was inside the restroom with her 2-year-old daughter at the time of the crash. The girl was on a changing table mounted to the interior of the wall which was struck.

"It was pretty chaotic," said Lieutenant Mark Farrall of the Newark Police Department. "There was actually another woman in another area at the time of the collision. She was able to run out. Her husband was actually able to come in and rip the wall off the stall and provide aid to the woman inside the stall and her daughter."

The girl suffered a head injury while the mother suffered a minor leg injury. Both were taken to Christiana Hospital. While the mother was treated and released, the girl was transferred to A.I. DuPont Hospital. She is listed in serious condition.

Police say they have the vehicle in their possession and are looking into possible mechanical failure. The 17-year-old teen was not injured. He has not been charged at this time as police continue to investigate.

The restaurant has since re-opened, though the restrooms have been temporarily closed and replaced with portable toilets.
