A Camden man has pleaded guilty to a role in a scheme to steal checks from industrial-park mailboxes and cash them.
Michael Ingalls, 35, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court on Thursday to conspiracy to commit bank fraud and possessing stolen mail.
He could get up to 35 years in prison when he's sentenced in Sept. 5.
Ingalls is the second man to plead guilty in the scheme where Ingalls, co-conspirator Ibn Muhammad and others would alter the payee’s name to match the name a recruited check chaser, according to the U.S. Attorney.
Authorities say they and others took more than 100 checks, cashing $300,000 worth and attempting to cash another $300,000 from 2010 through last year. The checks came from mailboxes in industrial parks around southern New Jersey.
