Suspected Rim-Riding Car Thief Shot by Cops

The unidentified suspect is in critical condition after being shot in the chest, according to police.

A man suspected of stealing a car was shot by police overnight.

The incident began around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Juniata Park section of the city.

Police say that an officer noticed a BMW traveling along G Street with a heavily damaged tire -- the wheel rim was visible. The officer checked the license plate and discovered it had been reported stolen.

Authorities say they tried to stop the vehicle, but the 29-year-old driver continued down G Street, eventually pulling into a nearby parking lot on the 700-block of Ramona Avenue.

According to police, the suspect jumped out of the car and was order to stop and place his hands on his head. He failed to do so.

Police say they were then forced to opened fire, hitting the suspect twice in the chest. 

The unidentified suspect was rushed to Temple University Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

Police continue to investigate.
