Philly to Extend Curfew 2 More Weeks

The city administration says it plans to extend for another two weeks Philadelphia's reduced curfew for teenagers in some areas on weekend nights.

Mayor Michael Nutter's spokesman Mark McDonald says that increased programs for the young people of the city will also be extended.

Nutter on Aug. 8 announced a 9 p.m. rather than 10 p.m. curfew for those under 18 on Fridays and Saturdays downtown and in the university area after mobs of young people engaged in random attacks on people as well as property damage.

Some people gathered Saturday night to protest the curfew, calling it illegal and racist and saying economic development was needed instead.

But McDonald says the effort has been a success and has gotten broad support from businesses and parents.
