Pa. State Senator Won't Seek Re-election: Aide

A three-term state senator from southeastern Pennsylvania won't seek re-election next year, becoming the third Republican planning to leave the chamber.

A top aide to Sen. Edwin Erickson of Delaware County said Friday that Erickson hadn't formally announced the news, but has told friends and associates.

Erickson, a member of Republican leadership who chairs its policy committee, wasn't immediately available to comment. The aide, Tom Golden, said he didn't know Erickson's reasons for leaving.

A former Environmental Protection Agency official, Erickson is a moderate who initially won a special election in 2001.

Republicans hold a narrow 27-23 Senate majority and Democrats have long believed they could capture Erickson's seat in an open race. Sens. Michael Waugh of York County and Michael Brubaker of Lancaster County are also leaving next year.
