NJ Residents May Pay for Car Emissions Tests

New Jersey drivers could soon be paying for their own emissions tests.

A report released Friday called for New Jersey to shut down its state inspection stations, and have motorists pay for their own emissions tests at private garages.

Right now the state pays for all initial vehicle inspections.

And drivers only pay if their vehicle fails and they have to make repairs.

It’s one of several recommendations to privatize state services, in a report commissioned by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie.

State parks, turnpike toll booths and prison services could also go private.

The report says its recommendations could save New Jersey $210 million a year.
