Metal Pipe-Wielding Business Owner Stops Robbery: Cops

Business owner thwarts robbery of shop, disarms would-be robber

A Delaware business owner armed with a metal pipe thwarted an armed robbery Monday and held down the gunman until police arrived, according to Delaware State Police.

It happened at about 2:45 p.m. Monday at Hitchens Auto Sales in Georgetown. Troopers say Aaron Jefferson, 27, entered the store, pulled a handgun from his waistband and demanded money from the female employee behind the counter.

Officers say the employee screamed and the gunman retreated. When Jefferson reached the door, the business owner -- with metal pipe in hand -- forced the gunman to the ground and disarmed him, police said.

No one was injured.

Police say they found drug paraphernalia on Jefferson. The Millsboro man was charged with attempted robbery, possessing a weapon and drug offenses. He was arraigned and sent to jail after being unable to post $120,100 cash bond.
