Local Vigils to Mourn Lives Lost in Orlando

Members of the LGBT community and supporters unite to organize vigils Monday June, 13, to mourn those killed in the massacre at a gay nightclub in Florida.

Early Sunday, 29-year-old Omar Mateen opened fire at the crowded Pulse Orlando club. Police say 49 victims died and 53 are wounded. Mateen also was killed.

A vigil will take place at the northeast corner of City Hall starting at 6:30 p.m. Nearly 2,000 people posted on the page that they would attend the event, a day after the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

Organizers said on their Facebook page the gathering will be an outpouring of  "grief, love and solidarity for the victims in Orlando."

A vigil will also take place in New Hope along the Delaware River starting at 8:00 p.m. in the grassy area by the Bucks County Playhouse. President Sharon Fronabarger and the Board of New Hope Celebrates said "we cannot give into fear and hate, but must turn to love and support during this time."

Other vigils were scheduled in Harrisburg at Broad Street Market starting at 7 p.m., Penn State University at 6 p.m., and in Norristown at the Reformed Church of Ascension, United Church of Christ, on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

A vigil was also planned in Ocean Grove, New Jersey at the QSpot LGBT Community Center Monday at 8:00 p.m.

Gov. Tom Wolf on Sunday ordered U.S. and Pennsylvania state flags at the Capitol complex, commonwealth facilities and public buildings in the state lowered to half-staff in honor of the victims.
