A New Jersey politician whose 2012 drunken driving stop led to a law requiring police to mount video cameras in their cars has been handed a court defeat.
A federal judge in Camden has dismissed a lawsuit against the Washington Township police department by Assemblyman Paul Moriarty. Moriarty claimed the department failed to adequately train and supervise its employees.
Moriarty contested the drunken driving charge and claimed he was the victim of a rogue police officer.
Months after the arrest Moriarty showed reporters a squad-car video he said would vindicate him. The charges were later dropped, and the officer was indicted for making a bogus arrest.
Moriarty's lawyer told The Philadelphia Inquirer the ruling doesn't preclude him from seeking damages from the officer in an individual capacity.
