Senator's Family Gets Out Alive

Pennsylvania State Senator Stewart Greenleaf and his family narrowly escape a fire that destroyed their Upper Moreland Township home Sunday morning.

Fire officials said the fire broke out at the two-story Upper Moreland Township home around 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

Greenleaf, his wife, his son and his son's girlfriend were awakened by smoke detectors, saw flames on the first floor and got out of the house, according to the Philadelphia Daily News.

About 150 firefighters responded and officials say high winds and freezing temperatures made fighting the fire difficult.

Senator Greenleaf released the following statement on the loss of his home:

β€œMy family and I have suffered the loss of our home to fire in Upper Moreland Township last night,” said Senator Greenleaf.  β€œAt approximately 3:00 a.m. Sunday morning, I awoke to a sounding smoke alarm.  I rushed my family outside to safety and thankfully no one was injured.  The entire structure was fast consumed by the blaze.  The cause of the fire is not yet known”

β€œI would like to thank all of the fire companies and volunteers who responded immediately and fought the fire under extreme conditions.  While we have lost all of our possessions, we are thankful for our lives.

β€œI ask that you keep my family in your thoughts and prayers as we go through this difficult time.”

There's no word yet on what caused the fire.

Senator Stewart Greenleaf is a Montgomery County Republican who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee.
