Father, Son Killed After SUV Crashes Into Central Jersey River

A father and his young son were killed when their sport utility vehicle ended up in a central New Jersey canal.

But authorities say the man's wife was able to escape the vehicle and swim to safety.

Somerset County authorities tell NJ.com that the crash occurred around 3 a.m. Sunday on Weston Canal Road in Franklin Township. The vehicle then left the roadway and ended up in the Delaware and Raritan Canal.

County divers searched the canal and found 29-year-old Jorge Luis Florez-Martinez, of Manville, and his 7-year-old son, Jorge Jr. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Yaritza Ruiz, the wife of Florez-Martinez and the boy's mother, apparently was not injured.

Authorities said it appears the SUV struck a guardrail and went into the canal.
