Dubious Distinction for NJ Route 130

South Jersey highway tops most dangerous roads list, again

It’s an undesirable distinction for a stretch of South Jersey highway.

According to a new report, Route 130 (Burlington Pike) in Burlington County is the most dangerous road for pedestrians in the Garden State.

And if that’s not already bad news, consider this: Route 130 has received that ranking for four years straight now.

A woman was killed while crossing the road in Delran back in Oct. 2010.

Ten pedestrians were killed on that route between 2008 and 2010. Most of the fatalities were between Burlington Township and Delran. Statewide, 435 pedestrians were killed on NJ roadways during that period.

The rankings are compiled by the public policy watchdog organization Tri-State Transportation Campaign.

The four most dangerous roads listed behind Route 130 are all in North Jersey. The White Horse Pike (US 30) in Camden County, also made the list, with five fatalities from 2008-10.

According to the report, pedestrian deaths were down slightly in 2010 from the previous year, but new NJDOT figures from 2011 show an increase.

Campaign officials say the roads on the list have been designed to move vehicles, but safety concerns for pedestrians and bicyclists need more attention.

“New Jersey has been taking steps to improve pedestrian safety, but these deaths are a reminder that more can and should be done,” said Matthew Norris, South Jersey advocate for the Campaign.
