Obama Brings Healthcare Reform Pitch to Philly Burbs

Protesters and supporters are expected at the event

President Barack Obama will visit Arcadia University Monday to pitch health care insurance reform at 11 a.m. at the Kuch Recreation and Athletic Center.

Arcadia University students lined up in the frigid cold weather over the weekend to grab a ticket to hear to the President.

Students filed in line as early as 8:00 p.m. Saturday and donned blankets, heavy coats -- some even slept on lawn chairs. Tickets were distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

”I am really shocked. Arcadia is a great school and I am just really glad we got the opportunity to have him come here,” said Marina Westfield, an Arcadia student.

President Obama has been trying to rally congressional support to push through legislation that would overhaul the health insurance system. He has called for an up-or-down vote in the coming weeks.

“I am not covered because I just graduated and it would really be great if he could come up with some sort of comprehensive plan to cover graduates like me. I am still looking for a job,” said Roberto Mesado, an Arcadia graduate.

Protesters are also expected to be at the event.

The Kuch Center holds 1,700 people.

Moria Mack, a White House spokeswoman, said the school was chosen because the Arcadia is “a school with a rich tradition of fostering the exchange of ideas, to speak directly with Pennsylvanians about how his health insurance reform plan will give American families more control of their own health care and shift power away from insurance companies,” Philly.com reports.
