Borgata, Revel Fined for Casino Violations

Filming a marriage proposal on the casino floor and broadcasting it over video monitors helped earn one Atlantic City an unusual fine from state regulators.

The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement revealed Tuesday it has issued $26,500 worth of fines against the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, and Revel Casino Hotel. The Borgata's fines were more conventional, involving the casino allowing underage patrons to gamble and drink while on the premises.

But Revel's fine was the more unusual. It was fined $2,500 for not letting the gaming enforcement division know in advance about certain events.

One of the violations involved casino staff, at the request of a patron, filming a marriage proposal on the casino floor on March 16, 2013. Revel broadcast audio and video of the proposal over video monitors in a gambling area.

That violated a requirement that the casino alert the gaming enforcement division at least five days in advance of any photography on the casino floor. The fine also covered Revel's failure to alert authorities about a television show filming there 11 days later, as well as its failure to notify them about six cards tournaments, and an event where alcoholic beverages were served at its "Taste Of Revel" promotion.

The Borgata was fined for three violations, including allowing a 19-year-old to gamble on Aug. 28, 2013.

According to the state, Borgata security twice approached the man, who was not identified in division documents, and asked to see identification as he was gambling. And twice, the man said he had lost his wallet, and was allowed to stay on the casino floor and resume gambling.

He was finally arrested hours later by state police who were doing a sweep looking for underage gamblers. That violation earned the casino a $10,000 fine.

The Borgata also was fined $7,000 each for two separate violations involving 19-year-olds being served alcoholic beverages on the casino floor on May 20 and July 5, 2013.
