An ailing former Philadelphia-area district judge can continue receiving chemotherapy under the care of her current doctors and won't be required to report to prison or post $1 million bail this week.
The Philadelphia Inquirer said Thursday that the order against former Chester County magisterial district judge Rita Arnold has been temporarily set aside by a Superior Court judge.
A sentencing judge last week had told Arnold she must post $1 million bail by Dec. 27 or surrender to begin serving 16 to 32 months for concealing a criminal citation filed against her son. The judge wouldn't reconsider a lesser sentence despite Arnold's diagnosis with an aggressive form of breast cancer.
Arnold's attorney said bail is supposed to ensure defendants will appear in court, not to punish them.
