A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Friday for Berks, Lehigh, Northampton, Carbon and Monroe counties.
A major snow and ice storm is expected in those counties, with amounts of 6-10 inches plus some ice.
Farther south, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Chester, Montgomery and Bucks counties. A combination of some snow accumulation (a few inches) plus significant icing will cause some driving problems.
In the Philadelphia area and points south, a little sleet is expected at the start, during the morning rush, but a change to rain will limit any travel troubles.
Here is what to expect Friday:
Allentown Area
- 7 - 9 am
Snow starts - 10 am - 1 pm
Snow becoming heavy - 1 pm - 7 pm
Possibility of a changeover to sleet - 8 pm - 11 pm
Switch back to snow
Philadelphia Area
- 7 - 9 am
Sleet starts - 10 am - 1 pm
Changeover to heavy rain - 1 pm - 7 pm
Rain slows down - 8 pm - 11 pm
Switch back to snow
The storm that is bringing the wintry weather is the same one that dumped several inches of snow in Las Vegas, the most in 30 years.
A strong jet stream is pushing the storms along very rapidly, so another winter storm is expected Sunday.
That one should have less snow and ice, but some is still expected in the northern counties.
