The Globetrotters always seem to have a trick up their sleeves.

In the world of basketball, Philadelphia icon, Louis "Red" Klotz has worn quite a few hats. He was a player, a coach, an owner and he can soon add honoree to the list.

Klotz, 90, will have his No. 3 jersey retired by the world famous Harlem Globetrotters, making him the first non-Globetrotter in history to receive this prestigious honor.

“[...] Red Klotz is an integral part of the Globetrotters’ legacy, and has played a major role in helping us bring smiles and entertainment to fans throughout the world for decades,” said Globetrotters CEO Kurt Schneider.

Early in his career, Klotz garnered a number of awards, while playing basketball for South Philadelphia High School and later Villanova University. However, he made a name for himself when he formed the Washington Generals, the team he created to compete against the Globetrotters.

Klotz will be honored at the Wells Fargo Center on Mar. 13, when his Washington Generals face the Harlem Globetrotters.

“It’s been a wonderful run,” said Klotz. “I played around the world wearing that No. 3 for many years, and it is very special to have the jersey retired.”

Of course just because the Globetrotters are honoring Klotz doesn't mean they plan on losing to the Generals -- that just doesn't happen too often.
