Redskins 27, Eagles 20: Standout Plays

LANDOVER, Md. — Reviewing the standout plays from the Eagles' 27-20 loss to the Redskins:

1. 1st quarter: Ryan Kerrigan's first full sack
Everyone knew the Eagles couldn't single up rookie Halapoulivaati Vaitai on Kerrigan.

The Eagles tried anyway.

Kerrigan bull-rushed Vaitai, who was replacing the suspended Lane Johnson, and sacked Wentz for a 6-yard loss, causing Twitter to erupt with stuff like this:

Four plays earlier, on the first play from scrimmage, Wentz was sacked by Kerrigan and safety Will Blackmon. It occurred on Big V's side but appeared to be a mismatch on tight end Brent Celek, who drew a holding penalty, which was declined.

Early in the second quarter, Kerrigan bulldozed Big V again and sacked Wentz for another 6-yard loss.

On a 12-yard completion to Agholor in the third quarter, Kerrigan drilled Wentz just after he released the pass.

A few plays later, Kerrigan ran right by Vaitai, who was blocking no one, and hurried Wentz into an incompletion to Wendell Smallwood in the flat.

This wasn't quite Winston Justice vs. Osi Umenyiora, but it was close.

2. 1st quarter: DeSean Jackson's 35-yard catch
You can't match up Vaitai on Kerrigan, and you can't let rookie Jalen Mills cover DeSean 1-on-1.

Jackson had beaten Mills earlier in the quarter for two shorter catches and drew a holding penalty on another.

This time, DeSean easily got a step on Mills off the line and beat him on a deep cross. Jackson, who had three catches for 35 yards last week against Baltimore, had three catches for 51 yards in the first quarter Sunday.

That said, give the rookie credit. He didn't back down, and Jackson finished with only four catches for 55 yards.

3. 2nd quarter: Wendell Smallwood's 86-yard kickoff return
The Eagles needed this one badly.

After Kirk Cousins easily found Vernon Davis for a 13-yard touchdown, Davis celebrated with a jumper over the goalpost, drawing a 15-yard penalty. Washington kicked off from its 20, and Smallwood got the Birds on the board by sprinting down the sideline for the score.

4. 2nd quarter: Robert Kelly's 45-yard run
The Eagles had trouble all day stopping the run.

Kelly, a rookie out of Tulane, broke a 45-yarder and was stopped when safety Rodney McLeod grabbed him by his hair.

This play set up the Redskins' second touchdown and was their longest play from scrimmage until ... we'll get to that.

5. 2nd quarter: Malcolm Jenkins' 64-yard pick-6
On the ensuing possession, Cousins was pressured by Marcus Smith (yes, really) and threw a back-footed toss to Davis, but Jenkins stepped in front and raced in for the tying score.

Jenkins had played a part in the first two Redskins' scores, getting beaten by Jamison Crowder on the first and allowing Davis to get behind him on the second. It's possible the Eagles were in zone and Jenkins was passing him off — but no one was there.

6. 2nd quarter: Roughing the passer on Fletcher Cox
It appeared the Eagles had forced Washington to settle for a field goal, but Cox, for the second straight week, was called for a costly roughing the passer penalty.

This time, on 3rd-and-goal from the four, he drilled Cousins, giving Washington a 1st-and-goal. Not sure whether it was late or it was helmet-to-head contact.

Matt Jones on third down easily ran in for the go-ahead TD.

7. Third quarter: Jenkins drops an interception in the end zone
Jenkins should have had two interceptions, but on the Redskins' first series of the second half, he dropped a pass intended for Jackson, and Washington kicked a field goal.

Early in the fourth, Jenkins was beaten again by Davis for a 37-yard gain down the sideline and, on the next play, he missed a tackle on RB Chris Thompson.

8. Third quarter: Illegal block by Smallwood
The Eagles' offense finally executed a big play, as Dorial Green-Beckham turned a short pass into a 38-yard gain, but it was erased by Smallwood's penalty.

9. Fourth quarter: Bomb to Jordan Matthews
Wentz goes deep down the middle to Matthews, who beat rookie Kendall Fuller. It gave the Eagles a first down at the Washington 26, but they had to settle for a 38-yard field goal after Smallwood was stuffed on 3rd-and-4.

10. Fourth quarter: Offsides, Rodney McLeod
This is only here because it was the Eagles' 11th penalty of the game and gave the Redskins a first down in a drive that ended with a 50-yard Dustin Hopkins field goal that made it 27-17.

The Eagles, who had 14 penalties for 111 yards last week against Detroit, finished with 13 penalties for 114 yards.

11. Fourth quarter: Matt Jones' 57-yard run
After Wentz held the ball too long and was sacked on successive plays, and the Eagles called timeout before punting, Jones fittingly, on the final play from scrimmage, sealed it and gave the Redskins a whopping total of 230 yards rushing on 33 carries, a gaudy 7.0 per attempt.
