NFL Notes: Broncos to Start Trevor Siemian at QB in 3rd Preseason Game

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Coach Gary Kubiak named Trevor Siemian the starter for the Broncos' third preseason game over Mark Sanchez and said he will decide next week who will be under center against Carolina for the season opener on Sept. 8.

"It's down to the nitty gritty here," Kubiak said. "I don't have to but I'm going to make a decision next week and we're going to go to work. I've seen a lot of football from them. We're going to go again this week and we'll make a decision next week."

Kubiak said Siemian, Sanchez and rookie Paxton Lynch will play an equal amount Saturday against the Los Angeles Rams.

Siemian and Sanchez ended training camp sharing the No. 1 quarterback spot on the team depth chart but neither has been able to claim the job outright. Both struggled with turnovers in Saturday's 31-24 loss to San Francisco.

Siemian was 10 of 14 for 75 yards but threw an interception that was picked off by Ed Reid and returned 42 yards for a touchdown.

"I thought Trevor did a good job the other night," Kubiak said. "Obviously there's one play he'd like to have back or it would have been as good as it could be. I'm going to give him a chance to do that again" (see full story).

The Giants made the move Monday, electing to sign a veteran with Josh Brown suspended for the regular-season opener against Dallas on Sept. 11.

The NFL suspended Brown last week for violating its personal conduct policy. He had been arrested in May 2015 on a fourth-degree domestic violence allegation. The King County prosecutor in Washington did not file a charge, citing insufficient evidence.

The Giants considered going with Obarski in the opener, but he missed a 27-yard field-goal attempt this past weekend (see full story).

Cowboys: Elliott nears debut as backfield deepens
FRISCO, Texas -- Dallas rookie Ezekiel Elliott appears set for his preseason debut at Seattle after the running back taken fourth overall by the Cowboys missed most of training camp with a hamstring injury.

Lance Dunbar was cleared medically this week following major knee surgery last year, and free agent Alfred Morris is shaping up as a solid insurance policy.

The Dallas running game looks deep behind one of the NFL's best offensive lines, and that's without a mention of last year's leading rusher, Darren McFadden. He's been out nearly three months after breaking an elbow in a household accident.

Once McFadden comes back, who knows how many carries there will be for him coming off his second career 1,000-yard season.

"I think a lot of people made a big deal about, we have so many running backs," coach Jason Garrett said. "You can never have that many running backs. We've found that out in the past" (see full story).

NFL: Former QB Marinovich arrested naked with drugs
IRVINE, Calif. -- Former USC and Los Angeles Raiders quarterback Todd Marinovich has been arrested after being found naked with marijuana and possibly methamphetamine in a stranger's backyard in Southern California.

Irvine Police Cmdr. Mike Hallinan said Monday that Marinovich was arrested Friday night after a call saying a naked man was on a hiking trail near homes. The officers found him in a backyard holding a brown bag containing marijuana and a substance that appeared to be meth but police are awaiting lab results.

The 47-year-old Marinovich was a star quarterback at USC and the Raiders' first-round draft pick in 1991, but drug problems drove him from the NFL after two seasons and he has had repeated run-ins with the law over drugs in the decades since.

Contact information for Marinovich or an attorney who could comment for him could not immediately be found.
