Eagles running back Brian Westbrook may not take the field at mini camp this season. Not because he has contract and trade issues (a la Sheldon Brown) or because his surgically repair knee isn’t ready. No, Westbrook has an injured ankle.

No. 36 will undergo a "minor procedure" to fix bone spurs, Westbrook's agent Todd France told ESPN Wednesday. The team confirmed that the surgery will occur on Friday in Baltimore, Md.

Coach Andy Reid said that Westbrook most likely injured himself doing personal workouts, according to the Delco Times.

Westbrook suffered a high ankle sprain in week three against Pittsburgh Steelers last season. The Birds didn't say if the new ankle injury was the same one from that game.

“His ankle is bothering him, so we’re checking it out here. I wish I could tell you more but I don’t know more right this minute. We’ll know more as we go on here the next couple of days,” Reid said according to the paper.

While Westbrook hasn’t played an entire season since entering the league in 2002, Reid told reporters that Westbrook has “been working like crazy” and that “he’s in great shape right now.”

As for Westbrook’s knee, the arthroscopic cleanup that happened early in the off-season went well and Westbrook was expected to be a full participant in the voluntary workouts before he injured his ankle, Reid said.

Veteran backup Lorenzo Booker and second-round rookie LeSean McCoy stepped in and took snaps at RB in Westbrook’s absence.
