Phillies Ready to Add Contreras to Mix: ESPN

Jose Contreras is poised to join the Phillies.

The Phillies hoped to bolster their pitching staff when they signed veteran righty Jose Contreras to a one-year deal.

The Contreras deal would be finalized pending a physical, sources told ESPNDeportes.com's Enrique Rojas.

The 38-year-old Cuban spent last season splitting time between the Rockies and White Sox. He is 71-63 with a 4.61 ERA over seven major-league seasons spent with the Rocks, Sox and Yankees.

Contreras has started mostly in the majors but he could possibly land as a long-relief option in the Phillies pen or fall into a Chan Ho Park-like role.

He was terrible as a starter with the White Sox in 2009 going 5-13 with a 5.42 ERA before he was sent to Colorado at the waiver-trade deadline. Once he went to the Rockies he was effective mostly as a reliever posting a 1.23 ERA with seven Ks in 7.1 innings of relief.

He even appeared in two playoff games for the Rockies. He gave up one run and struck out three in two innings of work against the Phillies in the NLDS.
