Samoan descendent Reno Mahe was among a group of NFL reps who would visit the Samoa region, which was struck by a devestating tsunami in September that killed more than 200 people.

When a tsunami hit American Samoa, Samoa and Tonga on Sept. 29 it left parts of the region in ruin. The NFL Player’s Association together with the NFL donated $50,000 -- and even the time of some former players with Samoan ties -- to the region.

Reno Mahe, as well as former Bears tight end Gabe Reid, were slated to rep the league on the rebuilding trip. Many players with Samoan backgrounds are also raising funds on their own to help victims.

The NFL will donate the money to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.
