Eagles Fans, Family, Friends Remember Hall of Famer Chuck ‘Concrete Charlie' Bednarik

Former NFL great Bednarik remembered at viewing in hometown

The Lehigh Valley and beyond paused Thursday to remember a sports legend.

Hall of Famer Chuck Bednarik is being remembered as a major figure in the history of the NFL and one of the Philadelphia Eagles' greatest players.

The Easton Express-Times reported that Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie was among the mourners at a public viewing Thursday for Bednarik in Bethlehem.

Lurie described Bednarik as someone who exhibited toughness, love of the game, pride and humility. He said the Eagles are working on plans to honor him next season.

Bednarik was known as "Concrete Charlie." The star linebacker and center -- the last player to play regularly on both offense and defense -- played for the Eagles from 1949 to 1962.

He helped the Eagles win the 1960 NFL championship, tackling Green Bay's Jim Taylor on the final play to seal the victory.

The viewing Thursday until 9 p.m. at the Connell Funeral Home on 245 East Broad Street in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. A private mass will be held Friday for friends and family.

The Bethlehem native died Saturday at an assisted living facility at the age of 89.

The Pro Football Hall of Famer left behind his wife of 67 years, five daughters, 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 617 A Main St., Hellertown, PA 18055 or The Boys and Girls Club of Bethlehem, 115 E. 4th St., Bethlehem, PA 18015.
