Delaware Budget Proposal Includes Better Senior Benefits, Transportation funds

Gov. Jack Markell is proposing a $3.9 billion operating budget for the fiscal year starting July 1, an increase of about 2.4 percent over the current year's budget.

Markell also proposed a capital budget of about $347 million for construction and road projects on Thursday, roughly the same as this year's authorization. The $45 million in proposed grants to nonprofit groups and community agencies is the same as this year.

To help balance the budget, Markell is proposing to cut millions of dollars in property tax breaks for senior citizens.

He also is again proposing using $40 million intended for transportation and infrastructure projects for operational needs, even though he has said the transportation fund faces financial challenges and has called for investing hundreds of millions of dollars in infrastructure.
