Trial for 2 in Alleged Baby-Selling Deal Postponed

Mother who allegedly sold her baby for $15,000 to pay for a trip to Disney World will have to wait longer for her trial to start.

A trial for the Newark, Del. woman accused of selling her baby and the Philadelphia man she allegedly sold the infant to for $15,000 has been postponed.

The trial for 33-year-old Bridget Wismer and 54-year-old John Gavaghan had been scheduled to begin this week in New Castle County Superior Court, but has been postponed until June 12, WDEL-AM reports.

Detectives were tipped off by Wismer's grandmother in early September to the alleged baby-selling, according to police. The baby boy was born on Aug. 31. According to court papers, Wismer didn't want the child.

Wismer was arrested after she and Gavaghan were caught on surveillance video finalizing paperwork, police say. Two days later Gavaghan was arrested in his Philadelphia home and the 1-month-old boy he had taken was placed in foster care, according to authorities.

Wismer and Gavaghan are charged with conspiracy and dealing in children. Both have pleaded not guilty.

Wismer has said the criminal charges against her are the result of a misunderstanding by authorities of her relationship with Gavaghan.
