Some men in northeastern Pennsylvania will soon be flexing their biceps, trying to show they've got what it takes be Mr. Anthracite.
The Mr. Anthracite natural bodybuilding and men's physique contest is returning to Schuylkill County next month after more than 30 years. Sponsored by the National Gym Association, it was once an annual event in Pennsylvania's anthracite coal region during the 1970s and 1980s.
NGA promotor Warren Egebo tells the Republican-Herald it was really a coveted title at the time, and the group wanted to bring the competition back. It's scheduled for April 27 at the Sovereign Majestic Theater in Pottsville.
As of Tuesday, nine contestants had signed up. Contestants must live or attend school in Lackawanna, Luzerne, Northumberland, Carbon or Schuylkill counties; they must also pass a polygraph test.
