School Sends Home Girl in Leggings; Dress Code Questioned

A high-school senior says she was unfairly sent home for a dress-code violation when she wore leggings to school.

Seventeen-year-old Emily Schaeffer, a student at Brandywine High School in Wilmington, tells WDEL-AM she doesn't believe the form-fitting pants she wore to school on Monday were inappropriate.

She said she was wearing a jacket that covered the top half of her lower half, and boots that came up to her knee, so only a few inches of leggings were showing.

Schaeffer's mom, Jessica Kupferman, supports her daughter.

She says school officials have claimed they are trying to create an environment where boys aren't distracted by girls' clothing. Kupferman says the boys need to be responsible for their own behavior.

School officials say the dress code promotes a proper learning environment.
