Store Clerk, Peace Activist Killed in W Kensington

Police are looking for 2 men who cops say robbed the store & shot an employee

Philadelphia Police are looking for two men that they say killed an employee during a Fishtown convenience store robbery.

Mustafa Shakur was killed after being shot once in the head.

The suspects allegedly waited for a customer to leave Trax Food on the 1200 block of Front Street around 3 a.m. before rushing into the store and demanding money from the clerk, cops said.

Shakur was working alone at the time.

The 50-year-old clerk -- who came from Egypt -- spoke very broken English and may not have understood the demand, a witness who was in the back of the store told cops.

Police believe the armed robbers grew frustrated with the victim and one of the men fired two shotgun shots, one of the blasts hit Shakur in the head killing him.

The two men then robbed the store and fled on foot, cops said. The cash register was hanging from wires off the counter and an undetermined amount of money was missing.

Police released surveillance video taken from the store that showed the entire chilling killing and robbery.

The suspects are described as males in their 20s, both wearing dark-colored hooded sweatshirts and jeans. One suspect’s sweatshirt had a Nike symbol on the front. The second suspect was wearing a hat with a white logo.

Shakur had started a campaign in the neighborhood to promote peace and even hung posters for the cause inside the store.

“He was a good person, ya know? …it’s a shame,” says a neighbor.

Anyone with information on this shooting is asked to contact Philadelphia Police at 215-686-3280.
