Sleeping Taxi Driver Taken Into Custody in South Philadelphia

A taxi driver is in custody after being found sleeping in his car in South Philadelphia.

A police officer noticed the driver asleep around Race Street and Delaware Avenue, police said. When they knocked on the window, he did not wake up.

The officer then broke the window because the officer believed the driver may have been experiencing a medical issue.

The driver woke up and began yelling profanity at the officer before taking off in the wrong direction on Delaware Avenue toward the Platt Bridge, according to police.

He drove over the bridge, then went back over the bridge to Columbus Boulevard and Oregon Avenue where he crashed his Lincoln Town Car through a fence and ended up against a guardrail.

The driver then jumped out of the car and ran toward the river, though police apprehended him before he made it to the water.

He was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital for a cut on his head. Police also said the man appeared intoxicated.
