Retail Worker Hit in Stomach After Shootout With Robbers: Police

Authorities say a clothing store worker was shot in the stomach after an off-duty corrections officer exchanged gunfire with an armed robber.

NJ.com reports that the corrections officer was in the store on Orange Street visiting relatives when two robbers entered around 6:30 p.m. Saturday.

Newark Chief of Detectives Anthony Ambrose says the officer identified himself to the robbers and then exchanged gunfire with one of them. Ambrose says one or both of the robbers were injured and they remain at large.

He says the 57-year-old employee was in stable condition.
